Brian Rossiter Inquiry |

The
Brian Rossiter Inquiry is a statutory inquiry
established by the Minister for Justice, Equality & Law
Reform, Michael McDowell T.D. into all the circumstances
surrounding the arrest and detention of 14 year
old Brian Rossiter at Clonmel Garda Station on
the night of the 10th/11th September, 2002 and
the subsequent investigation of his death.
Brian Rossiter lapsed into a coma while in custody
at Clonmel Garda Station and was subsequently transferred
to Cork University Hospital where he was pronounced
dead on the 13th September, 2002.
Soon
after Brian’s death, his family were
made aware of allegations that Brian had been assaulted
in the course of his arrest and detention by members
of An Garda Siochana (police). Despite repeated
calls for an independent investigation of all the
circumstances of his detention and death, no satisfactory
action was taken in the matter until June 2005
when the Minister for Justice established this
inquiry.
The Brian Rossiter Inquiry began hearing sworn
evidence on Monday 5th December, 2005. It is expected
to continue taking testimony from witnesses for
some months before a report is prepared for the
Minister for Justice who will then publish the
report.
